Flagstaff is home to a number of the nation's leading medical research and device manufacturers, including W.L. Gore & Associates, Machine Solutions and TGen North and has one of the highest employment per capita rates in medical device manufacture in the nation.

  • W.L. Gore is one of the major employers in the community and specializes in materials and components that solve complex medical problems in vascular, endovascular, interventional, general surgery, cardiothoracic, oral and orthopaedic procedures.
  • The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) North has a unique partnership with Northern Arizona University, joining the ranks of facilities across the country whose research centers on detection and prevention of biological threats. Initial research activities are focused on common infectious diseases like influenza and valley fever, hospital infections like drug resistant staphylococcus, and a number of bioterrorism agents, including tularemia and plague. Northern Arizona University is home to more than 13,000 students, and in 2006, research activities spanned 50 departments and research centers, and generated over $58 million in new external grants and contracts.
